In a remarkable stride towards environmental sustainability, Kerala is setting a pioneering example through its ambitious mission to become completely waste-free. This environmental revolution is spearheaded by the Haritha Karma Sena, whose efforts have not only cleansed the state but have also turned waste into a valuable resource, generating substantial revenue. Imagine a Kerala where waste is not an eyesore but a source of wealth and pride.
In just a short span, the Haritha Karma Sena has earned a staggering Rs 23 crore by selling waste. This year alone, approximately Rs 6 crore has flowed into the accounts of its dedicated members. This transformation is not just about numbers; it’s about a change in mindset, where waste is viewed not as a problem, but as an opportunity.
The vision of a waste-free Kerala was a dream nurtured by the Left government. Through the relentless efforts of the Haritha Karma Sena, this dream is steadily becoming a reality. By collecting and selling waste from various locales, they have amassed Rs 23.38 crore so far. As of October 31 this financial year, Rs 5.70 crore has already been credited to the accounts of Haritha Karma Sena members, reflecting the tangible benefits of their hard work.
The financial achievements of the Haritha Karma Sena are commendable. Last financial year, they earned Rs 9.79 crore, and the year before that, Rs 5.08 crore. These figures speak volumes about the efficacy of their waste management strategies. The non-biodegradable materials they collect, which can be reused, are handed over to the Clean Kerala Company. This company sells these items at a competitive price, and the proceeds are credited back to the Haritha Karma Sena’s consortium. This symbiotic relationship not only ensures effective waste management but also provides a steady income stream for the Sena members, who currently number 35,352 strong.
The Haritha Karma Sena has also innovated in their approach to waste collection. Since January 26, 2021, they have been buying collected plastic through doorstep services. This initiative, implemented in 742 local bodies, has made it easier for residents to dispose of their waste responsibly, thereby reducing the incidence of indiscriminate dumping.
Non-reusable, non-biodegradable waste is not left to rot but is sent to cement factories outside the state. This method of waste disposal has proven effective, as evidenced by the significant increase in the number of people opting to give their waste to the Haritha Karma Sena rather than dumping it illegally.
From April 2023 to October 31, under the capable leadership of the Clean Kerala Company, an impressive 82,619 tonnes of waste have been removed. Up to October this financial year, 35,070 tonnes of waste have been collected. This represents a remarkable monthly increase of 5,000 tonnes in waste collection. By the end of this financial year, Clean Kerala Company aims to remove 60,120 tonnes of waste, underscoring their commitment to a cleaner, greener Kerala.
The achievements of the Haritha Karma Sena illustrate a powerful narrative of how community-driven initiatives can lead to significant environmental and economic benefits. By turning waste management into a profitable venture, Kerala is setting a benchmark for other states to follow. It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the impact of strategic planning.
As Kerala continues on its journey towards becoming completely waste-free, the efforts of the Haritha Karma Sena serve as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication, innovation, and community spirit. It’s a reminder that with the right approach, even the most daunting challenges can be transformed into opportunities.
